Sweetie (1989)
Tonight I watched Sweetie, Jane Campion's first feature. It's a Criterion so some early short films by the director are included. I watched those yesterday. They were funny, odd and sad, which I guess is a popular combination. I think I liked them better than Sweetie. She did a movie recently with Meg Ryan, maybe. I feel like my paragraphs are full of uncertainty. Oh well. So, anyway, this movie is about a woman living with her boyfriend and her very literally crazy sister and her parents and how they all deal with each other and the crazy sister. It's funny, sad and odd, too, like the shorts. The characters are all pretty unlikable-- a plus in my book. I was distracted by finishing up my mix for the trade. It must be no surprise that I'm a little late with it too. But okay, Sweetie is short but feels long. The colors are great and it's Australia (or New Zealand?), so what people are wearing and what their houses look like score high with me. There's some tree fear and some tea leaf readings, so you've got your metaphors and whatnot. Even though I didn't love it, I still think you should watch it if you're ever in the mood for one of those sad crazy family dramas that looks really great. I'm hoping this will lead to a female directors kick.

jane campion has never been a favorite. why don't i like female directors. i think netflix is always trying to get me to watch that one recently. i'm glad it looked good. i don't know if i like it when all the characters are unlikable. i think i really like likablitiy. that's lame, huh?
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on yourself! I think I just like to be uncomfortable sometimes, but not all the time. I also think all the characters in What about Bob? are really likable, so what does that say about me?
ReplyDeleteAnd one last thing: what other campions have you seen? Me, only An Angel at My Table and this one. Last last thing: what other female directors do you not like? Maybe I would like them.
i guess i've seen the piano and holy smoke. i think i've seen holy smoke. there are other movies that have kate winslet that are like that one like hideous kinky. but i think i've seen both hideous kinky and holy smoke and liked holy smoke better.
ReplyDeleteummm, other females... shit. i'll have to get back to you. why don't more females direct movies?
There was an article in the guardian about that awhile back. I guess it's not easy to break the glass lens, haha, bad joke. Have you seen Humpday? That was directed by a woman, but it's about straight dudes making gay porn and is apparently good.
ReplyDeletei haven't seen it but it's another one netflix wants me to watch. did you hear that story a while back on NPR about how netflix and pandora recommend stuff? it was pretty cool. and netflix offered a big pot of money to someone who could come up with a better way and someone did, so soon netflix will be even better!
